The day was meant to be a happy one and from the onset it was. Players made legendary entrance into the pitch in style to be received by a wild crowd of fans estimated to be at over 45k
At last the 18 year trophy drought cast was dispelled and the players got the opportunity to lift the most prestigious trophy of football in the land. The organisers Tusker constructed a world class trophy and medals awarding stage and one by one they came and received their medals from the club patron Raila amongst other guests the place was heavily guarded,at least they thought so.
Eventually the most awaited moment came and the trophy was lifted
That would mark the end of beautiful scenes,as the players were getting carried away struggling to have a hold of the ornament,a section of unruly fans were surging and within a flash even before the players could have a photo shoot with the trophy as scheduled, the pitch was invaded with a mass of hooligans, breaking the heavy police wall put up by GSU
They disrupted everything and grabbed the trophy from the captain almost breaking it
But that was not the end of it,the stage was brought down with a disastrous stampede field created
The fans took over the event, throwing bottles at the police who tried to fire teargas at them. The commandant immediately called out the officers. Backstage the players were murmuring in anger one was overheard saying "we are champions who never got to hold the trophy".
But that wasn't the end of ugly scenes, one attendant reveals to Nairobi Exposed,"as I was driving from Kasarani around Muthaiga,I spotted several fans in the team's Jersey carrying white plastic chairs probably looted from the stadium, its also said the VIP section was vandalised and the chairs taken"
The celebrations as the tradition have it,took climax at the Tom Mboya's monument along Moi Avenue. Here was the epitome centre of hooliganism according to Jane a lady who was victimised by some drunk unruly fans,"we are just passing with my gals and out of nowhere these people raids and insists on grabbing our a***s it wasn't funny and we tried running away,we were told by onlookers that they've been assaulting ladies passing by there in the same manner" said Jane to Nairobi Exposed.
Another unreported scene us pelting, anyone who was along the avenue on Monday would have noticed smashed glasses on the road, according to witnesses some of the fans terrorised motorists demanding money, failure to which their car windows were smashed.
The day was historic to the club and will also go down the history as a hooliganism galore.
