Kenyan conmen change their tactics faster and often than a chameleon does. When one trick is exposed they model a new one.
It had been exposed how they use fake pictures to buy advertisement spaces in local dailies and place medical please, reaping off from the unsuspecting philanthropic public.
A new trick has been unearthed yet again and all has to do with the dead. Those who announce the deaths of their departed ones on the obituary sections of the dailies are the target.
One will call you with a number with foreign initials claiming to be a friend to the deceased, remember they've read all the details in the obituaries so they are well informed.
The caller will say how sorry he is to learn of the death of the "friend,schoolmate,workmate...." and offering to make a contribution towards the funeral asks for your details to be able to wire the money to.
The next day he calls informing you of having sent the money via a specified international money transfer, the next thing is you receive a call supposedly from a bank's representative informing you of having received certain amount from specific person abroad and gives you the time you should show up and collect the money.
Unknown to you, there is no such thing as s bank, these people are sitting easy somewhere coordinating the events to con you. Naturally with the call from "bank representative" one gets a sense of surety and legitimacy of it all.
But again here is when the real game starts, the person who supposedly sent the money from abroad, makes an emergency call talking about how a friend has been stranded at the airport in Nairobi and you should send certain amount to facilitate the problem telling you the money you'll use shall be recovered when you go to the bank to withdraw the sent cash.
It won't be easy to suspect anything, the conmen have the best persuasive language in human history, with the bank's assuring call at the back of your mind, you decide to send the money and that's the end of the journey for you.
After making the deposit to the number you were given, all the numbers goes off,no bank exists,no friend in diaspora, the reality of having been tricked hits.
These people knows that you'll be having the contributions money collected from friends and families towards the burial and it is that what is their target.
Robbing the dead.
